St. Louis Community College’s Robert Cruz Named NAECAD Rising Star Award Winner
The National Association of Esports Coaches and Directors (NAECAD) has named Robert Cruz, Esports Coordinator at St. Louis Community College (STLCC), as the recipient of the prestigious 2025 NAECAD Rising Star Award.
This award honors individuals who have stepped into the demanding role of leading an esports program and made an immediate, meaningful impact in their first year. Robert Cruz exemplifies the spirit of this recognition—not only for his leadership and innovation but also for his deep understanding of the student-athlete experience.
A former collegiate esports player himself, Cruz brings a unique perspective to his role. He holds a master's degree in Sports Management and has developed a coaching philosophy centered on building future leaders and professionals who understand themselves and those around them.
"In order for this industry to continue growing, we need new people to take on the challenge of running an esports program and all the stress that comes with it," said a NAECAD spokesperson. "Robert Cruz is proof that the industry is evolving. His journey from player to program leader is inspiring, and his impact at STLCC in just one year is nothing short of remarkable."
Sharon Marquardt, STLCC Athletic Director, added, "I am incredibly impressed and extremely proud of Robert and the success he has brought to our first season of Esports at STLCC. His dedication, vision, and leadership have laid a strong foundation for the future of the program, and we are excited to see where he takes it next."
As STLCC's Esports Coordinator, Cruz has not only elevated the college's competitive presence but also fostered a culture of inclusivity, discipline, and personal growth among his players.
Please join us in congratulating Robert Cruz—the 2025 NAECAD Rising Star.
