Weekend roundup: Volleyball competes, but drops three over the weekend
In the Archers’ latest step toward becoming a consistent, competitive figure in the region, the Archers competed closely in a trio of matches over the weekend, but were left without a win over the three days.
One day after falling in consecutive sets to Webster University’s junior varsity, the Archers lost both ends of a tri-match with Wentworth Military Academy and Southwestern Illinois College. The Archers went down 21-25, 18-25 and 10-25 to SWIC. Their match with Wentworth was much closer, with the final tally 23-25, 23-25, 13-25.
“Our biggest challenge right now is being able to close out a set,” Archers head coach Chris Arbini said, his point emphasized with his team posting leads in each of the first two sets against Wentworth before succumbing.
“It’s something we’ve worked on in practice and we’re making progress. We’re fighting harder, longer, but we’re not there. It’s definitely a mindset to have the end goal in mind the whole way through, but it’s the forest through the trees. The focus aspect comes with each individual point.”
The Archers (1-9) have dropped six consecutive matches, and will travel on Wednesday to East Central Community College. After hosting four of their last five matches at home, STLCC will play at home only four more times the rest of the season.
