Archers fall in straight sets to Kaskaskia

As St. Louis Community College’s volleyball team nears the midway point of the season, they’ll be in search of a bit of positive momentum, something that has proven elusive over the past month.

It’s been a difficult few weeks for the Archers, who carry a 1-12 overall record into a weekend tournament at Cottey College.

Little went right for the Archers in their 25-7, 25-10, 25-10 on Tuesday against Kaskaskia, the team’s ninth consecutive loss. While they have been competitive in recent matches, the Archers have not won a set outside of their lone victory of the season, a five-set victory against Southeastern Community College.

“The team we played today, we were outperformed athletically, and that hasn’t necessarily been the case many times this year,” Archers head coach Chris Arbini said. “It’s tough to stop that, so to play a team that is playing the game six to eight inches above where we are, that’s not something we’re in a position to control. Our youth and our inexperience showed, as well.”

The Archers will play four games over the next three days, including their tournament at Cottey College on Saturday and Sunday, as they aim to build momentum entering October. STLCC will return home on Wednesday, September 30 against perennial power East Central College.
