Archers fall in four sets to Webster

In a match that has personified the steady, but gradual late-season resurgence of STLCC volleyball, the Archers fell in four sets to Webster University’s junior varsity in the team’s final home game of 2015. The Archers (3-22) fell to the Gorloks 25-21 in the first set, before battling back for a 25-22 win in the second. Webster closed out its win with 25-11 and 25-19 victories in the third and fourth sets.

In what has been a season of incremental progress, the second-set win was the first of the team’s 22 match losses to move beyond the minimum three sets. A youthful team that honored its lone sophomore—outside hitter Megan Ramsey—on Wednesday, the Archers followed a two-win performance last weekend with a showing that, despite the loss, received high marks from the team’s head coach.

“I’m encouraged by the battle,” head coach Chris Arbini said. “We’ve proven that we can battle, we can work, we can score against anybody. Unfortunately, we didn’t do enough tonight to pull out the match win, but the thing that encourages me is that we can and will fight.”

STLCC plays a sparse schedule through the remainder of the regular season, as they have more than a week off before travelling to their next match at Wentworth Military Academy on October 24.

Mike Duffy’s Bar and Grill Play of the Match:

Our Duffy’s Play of the Match came in the first set, when freshman outside hitter Alyssa Sarandos put the finishing touch on her 100th kill of the season, becoming the first Archers player to reach that mark this season. Sarandos finished the evening with a team-best 14 kills.
