Women’s soccer opens year on a high note

Eager to begin 2015 with a positive step, the Archers traveled to Coffeyville Community College Saturday for the first of four consecutive road games to open the season.

They emerged from Saturday’s season opener with that positive step, in the form of  a 1-0 win. After a scoreless first half, Kate Wing delivered the Archers’ first goal of the season, and her first collegiate goal, beating the Coffeyville goalie to the far post. Goaltender Amanda Hughes, who will battle with sophomore Paige Theby for time in net, made her first start as an Archer, collecting her first career win and shutout.

The win made it consecutive season-opening victories for head coach Erin Hesselbach since taking over last year. The Archers defeated Maple Woods by the same 1-0 score in their season opener last year.

The win also avenged a 2-0 loss to Coffeyville last season in the only meeting between the two teams.

The Archers will be in action again tomorrow against Neosho Community College at 1 pm.
