Typically, a 4-0 loss isn’t much to signal encouragement or a step in a positive direction, but Wednesday’s women’s soccer game would rank among the outliers.
Squaring off against Lewis and Clark Community College, who dominated the Archers to the tune of an 11-0 whitewash earlier this year, STLCC displayed a stark contrast, particularly in a second half. Amanda Hughes was often under fire throughout the second half, though yielded just a single goal in the period.
“To face a team that beat us 11-0, and with about 30 minutes remaining on the clock, the second half today was much better,” head coach Erin Hesselbach said. “We’re getting healthier and we’re starting to look much more like the team we expected to be.”
Hesselbach’s Archers have dealt with a litany of injuries throughout the regular season, but with two regular season games remaining, they approach postseason with nearly a full lineup once again.
STLCC has posted a record of 2-4-2 in its last eight games, and has limited its opponents to two goals or fewer in six of those eight contests.
The Archers (4-8-2 overall) will conclude the regular season over the next 10 days, first by traveling to Heartland Community College on Saturday, and finishing at Kaskaskia on October 17.
STLCC will open regional tournament play on Friday, October 30. STLCC will be the region host.
