Archers Claim Region Championship With Win Over MCC

After earning the #1 seed for the Region XVI Tournament, the STLCC women's basketball team received a first round bye, placing them in the championship game on Saturday, February 29 against Metropolitan CC.  After a slow start in Saturday's championship, STLCC caught fire offensively and took a 33-22 lead into the half.   Archers were able to hold on in the second half for a 59-47 win after several runs by the Wolves.

Janet Garrett led STLCC in scoring with 22 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double.  Freshman Kierra Winkeler also recorded a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Kyla Richardson reached double figures for the Archers as well with 13 points.  Ronne'zja Elliott led the team in assists with six. 

 With Saturday's Region XVI Championship win, STLCC improved to 14-13 overall.  The Archers also advance to the Plains District Championship, which will be held at the winner of NJCAA Region 2 (Arkansas) on Saturday, March 7.  The winner of the Plains District Championship will advance to the NJCAA D2 National Women's Basketball Championship in Port Huron, MI.  The D2 National Women's Basketball Championship will take place March 17-21.
