Archers gear up for home finale, sophomore celebration 

In the season’s final weeks, the St. Louis Community College women’s basketball team finds itself poised for a top seed in the Region XVI Tournament later this month. The Archers will have a chance to run the region table at home this week. 

STLCC enters Saturday’s game against Wentworth Military Academy undefeated in six previous regional contests. Their only meeting with Wentworth resulted in a 93-33 win on January 30, the team’s largest margin of victory this season.

The Archer women (13-12) have cruised to wins in 10 of their past 12 games, and have managed a significant amount of adversity in the process. At the midpoint of the season, STLCC withstood a knee injury to guard Shania Thornton, who was leading the team in scoring before guard Shiana Carrington took that mantle.

Carrington was recently removed from a game due to injury as well, and it was Thornton’s turn to carry the load again, as she scored 22 points in Carrington’s absence.

A win Saturday would move the Archers to two games above .500 for the first time this season, after a 3-10 start.

 

Sophomores honored

During Saturday’s game, the Archers will honor the careers of five Archers women’s basketball players—Marche Belcher, LaShonda Brewer, Shiana Carrington, Abbey Holtkamp and Amanda Hughes. Holtkamp and Hughes are the lone holdovers from last year’s region finalist team.

 

Cancer Awareness game

Saturday also is the team’s cancer awareness game, in honor of the Ethridge Foundation. Head Coach Shelly Ethridge and her family organize the event in honor of her parents, and all proceeds from the event go toward benefiting a local cancer patient.
