Archers women run Region XVI table

Archers women keep momentum rolling, defeat Penn Valley

For yet another season, St. Louis Community College’s women’s basketball team has asserted its regular season superiority in Region XVI. The team staked that claim in their 67-64 win over Penn Valley on Saturday, giving the Archers an unblemished, 8-0 record against regional opponents.

Though the outcome was not nearly as decisive in the Archers’ second meeting with Penn Valley this winter, the win was no less impactful. It granted the Archers the top seed in the Region XVI tournament, which begins on Friday in Joplin. The Archers used a combination of guards Shania Thornton and Shiana Carrington, who have carried the team's offense for much of the season, to combine for 27 points in the win over Penn Valley.

Neither Thornton nor Carrington performed to their typical levels, but the duo also combined for 19 rebounds, with Thornton leading the way with 10 to collect a double-double, in combination with her 13 points.

The win improved the Archers to 15-13 overall, which includes their 8-0 mark against Region XVI. Should STLCC manage to continue its dominance at the Region XVI tournament, STLCC would earn itself an additional home game on March 5 in the District P playoff, against the District 2 winner, for the right to advance to the NJCAA tournament. The STLCC women last hosted a district playoff game in 2013, when STLCC defeated Arkansas Mid-South to earn a second consecutive NJCAA tournament berth.
