Archers look to regain momentum against Mid-South

Plagued by injuries throughout much of the first half of the season, St. Louis Community College’s women’s basketball team has scuffled to a 2-8 start, the first time STLCC has been six games below .500 in head coach Shelly Ethridge’s tenure.
The Archers will return to action Tuesday evening against Arkansas State Mid-South, who defeated the Archers 81-52 on November 20.

Tuesday’s game will represent a quick turnaround after a 73-48 loss to Lake Land College on Sunday afternoon at the Archers Women’s Classic. After an initial hot start that saw the Archers seize an early nine-point lead, the Archers’ momentum stalled, as the Archers faltered down the stretch by being outscored in each of the final three quarters.

“We ran out of gas a bit,” Ethridge said. “When we get tired, we tend to not play very smart. We were down a few people today, and we made some mistakes that I don’t think we would have made if we had everyone here. They pressed us, and they turned us over a lot with that press.”

In her first game since returning from a knee injury, freshman guard Shania Thornton struggled to regain the level of play she enjoyed before the injury. She finished Sunday’s game with 10 turnovers and connected on just five of 20 attempts from the field.
“She’s going to battle that knee through the year,” Ethridge said. “She just kind of wore down.”
With Tuesday being the last home game until January 13, the Archers’ season could certainly be buoyed by a victory over Mid-South. STLCC is 1-4 at home this season. Game time Tuesday is 5:30 pm.
