Second-half struggles sink Archers in home opener

Lindenwood University-Belleville rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat the Archers 64-61 at STLCC-Forest Park on Tuesday evening.

Giving fans their first look at the revamped STLCC women’s basketball team, the Archers appeared poised to open the home schedule on a positive note when they carried a 28-20 lead into the half. The second half was not nearly as kind to the Archers, particularly defensively in transition.

Hampered by 21 turnovers, the Archers allowed 16 fast-break points. The Archers  (1-2) have committed more than 20 turnovers in each of the team’s two losses. Guard Sherriah Robinson led Lindenwood-Belleville with 27 points on 9-of-21 shooting, and also connected on seven of her eight free throw attempts.

Falling just shy of a second 30-point performance, freshman guard Shania Thornton led the Archers with 29 points on 12-of-25 shooting.  Thornton also grabbed 10 rebounds to collect her first career double-double. Also for a second straight game, finding offense elsewhere proved difficult. Zenobia Reeds poured in 10 points and Shamara Glover added nine, but all other Archers were limited to no more than four.

STLCC will return to action on Saturday, when they host Rend Lake CC at 1 pm.
