Beat goes on for Carrington, Archers in lopsided win

Securing a double-double and leading the Archers to a victory has become something of a routine for sophomore guard Shiana Carrington. So in Wednesday evening’s 79-46 victory over Washington University’s junior varsity, Carrington did one better, by reaching that double-double in the first half alone.

Her 17 points and 10 rebounds paced all participants in the first half, and she finished with a game-best 23 points and 11 rebounds while sitting out a majority of the second half. For the year, Carrington is averaging 23 points and nine rebounds per game. Though she lacks enough games played to qualify for national statistical leaders, she would rank fourth nationally in points per game. That pace of production closely mirrors that of Deborah Holcomb, who earned All-American honors for 25.2 points and 8.2 rebounds for the Archers a year ago.

Also turning in a stout performance on Wednesday was guard Shania Thornton, who scored 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field.

The victory evened the Archers’ record at 11-11, the first time this year they’ve achieved the break-even mark. After a 4-10 start, the Archers are 7-1 since January 9.

STLCC is in the midst of a four-game homestand, which will resume Saturday, when they host North Central Missouri College. The Archers defeated North Central 82-60 in the season’s first meeting between the perennial Region XVI foes on January 16.
