Archer women ride dominant second half to blowout win over Penn Valley

Saturday afternoon was a familiar sight for STLCC basketball fans— another convincing victory for an Archers women’s basketball team that put on one of the most stark about-face turnarounds in the NJCAA this winter.

STLCC led by just seven at the half, before a dominant second half that sent the Archers to a 91-60 win over Region XVI foe Penn Valley. The win extended the team’s winning streak to a season-long five games.

In what has become a recurring theme, the Archers were paced by sophomore guard Shiana Carrington, who provided 29 points and a season-best 18 rebounds. After opening the season at just 2-8, the Archers have won seven of their past nine games, to climb within a game of the .500 plateau at 9-10.

Carrington has been on a tear since joining the active roster on Dec. 30. Before her double-double performance Saturday, Carrington entered the game averaging 23.6 points and nearly eight rebounds per game. Saturday’s win kept the Archers undefeated against Division II Region XVI opponents, with just nine regular season games remaining. The Archers will close the regular season at Penn Valley on Feb. 15. STLCC will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to State Fair Community College.
