Archers Sweep Cottey to Take Over the Region 16 Top Spot

On Monday, the Lady Archers used two contrasting games to sweep Cottey College, and at the same time take sole possession of the top spot in Region 16 play, winning the opener, 4-1 and completing the sweep with an 8-5 victory in the nightcap.  The Archers improve to 16-7 on the season and 7-1 in Region 16 play, with doubleheaders still to play against Mineral Area College and East Central College.  

Game 1

Sarah Shepard ran her record to 6-5 on the season, by spinning a gem in the circle with seven strong innings pitched, allowing only a single hit and an unearned run, while striking out three hitters.  Jenn Luebbert notched two hits, including a double to lead off the game and scoring a run.  The Archers scored all four runs in the first inning with Anna Counts, Morgan Moss, Kacy Bergfeld and Abby Lavely each driving in runs.  

Game 2

In the nightcap, Hannah Marquardt improved to 8-1 on the season, by throwing six and two-thirds innings, striking out three hitters and allowing three earned runs.  Luebbert and Moss each collected three hits, with Luebbert scoring two runs and Moss scoring two runs and driving in three runs, Bergfeld added a double and two RBI and Sadiya Collins drove home two runs. 

Cottey College entered the series averaging 10.3 runs per game, but the Archers held the Comets to eleven runs over the four games.
