Softball Gets the Sunday Sweep at SWIC

The St. Louis Community College Softball team is in preparation mode for the Region 16 tournament, and Sunday afternoon they completed a sweep at SWIC, winning the opener 8-0 and taking the nightcap 6-4.  Hannah Marquardt picked up the win in both games to improve to 13-3 on the year.

Game 1

The Archers scored two runs in the top of the first inning to set the tone for the game, as the scored in four of the five innings for the 8-0 victory.  Jenn Luebbert and Anna Counts each collected two hits and a double, with Luebbert scoring three runs and driving in two of her own.  Kacy Bergfeld doubled and drive in two runs in the victory, while Molly Darner doubled and Ashley Shepard tripled and scored two runs.  Marquardt allowed two hits and struckout four hitters to pick up the win in game one.

Game 2

Once again, the Archers jumped out to an early lead by scoring two runs in the top of the first, eventually taking a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning.  But, the SWIC offense answered with a four spot in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game.  With two outs and nobody on base in the top of the seventh inning, the Archers offense went to work with Bergfeld and Darner each reaching base on singles to set up the heroics for Abby Lavely who tripled to right field and giving the Archers a 6-4 lead that they would not relinquish.  Marquardt picked the win as she pitched 2.2 innings of relief.  Bergfeld had three hits, including a double, and three RBI in the win, while Counts scored two runs and had two hits, including a triple and Morgan Moss added a double.

STLCC returns to action on Tuesday with a road doubleheader at Lewis & Clark, before starting Region 16 tournament play on Friday at Mineral Area College.
