Men's soccer season ends in Region XVI semifinal

In a year of revitalization for the St. Louis Community College’s men’s soccer team, one team proved to be a thorn in the side of the Archers throughout 2015. East Central continued that run of success against the Archers on Tuesday, defeating STLCC 4-2 in the Region XVI semifinal.

“I think we were a pretty close team with them,” Archers head coach Tim Mosby said. “I think they were the best team in the region. We had a chance to get it done, but just couldn’t finish. They had a lot of guys to contain and are just a really solid team.”

The Archers finished the year 16-6-1 overall, with a 0-2-1 record against East Central.

East Central opened the scoring in the 27th minute, only to have the Archers’ Alfie Fletcher respond with the equalizer two minutes later. East Central added three of the next four goals, however, to advance to the Region XVI title game.

Though the year ended on a disappointing note, Mosby left the season on a positive note, as the Archers improved their win total by nine between his first and second years at the helm.

“I’m proud of what we’ve done to help revitalize the program,” Mosby said. “I think we went beyond our goals this year, and it’s a stepping stone for the future. We just need to add some missing pieces, and we’ll address that in our recruiting for next year. Another part of what we did this year is win with mostly freshmen. If you would have told me in the spring that we would be 16-6-1, I would have thought that was pretty lofty, but when you look at the season, there are games we won and weren’t supposed to. We can do better next year and plan to.”
