Archers avenge early-season loss to SWIC

Men’s soccer avenges early-season loss, defeats SWIC

In a win that displayed a season-long development for the Archers, St. Louis Community College’s men’s soccer team secured a key road victory in defeating Southwestern Illinois College 4-2 on Wednesday. The Archers, buoyed by four second-half goals, avenged a 4-3, overtime loss to SWIC on August 29. That loss was the first of the season for STLCC, who will enter the final weekend of the regular season at 14-5-1.

Freshman Pelius Britto, Jr. opened the scoring for the Archers, notching the first of two goals in the 54th minute. Britto also added an assist on Casey Bartlett-Scott’s goal in the 61st minute. Robel Barkat also contributed a goal, in the 57th minute. Britto’s 22 points (seven goals, eight assists) are tied with Bartlett-Scott for third-most on the Archers.

The Archers’ offense, which has been a point of strength all season, has provided multiple goals in eight of the past nine games. The lone exception was in a 2-1 loss to Maple Woods on October 11.

Goaltender Nicklaus Bertich saved three of the five shots on goal from SWIC on Wednesday to gain credit for his 11th win of the season.

The win was the fourth in the past five games for the Archers, who will conclude the regular season Sunday at Central Methodist University. It will be the second of two meetings between the two teams. STLCC defeated CMSU 5-1 on August 30.

Mike Duffy’s Bar and Grill Play of the Game:

The Duffy’s play of the game Wednesday was Britto’s first of two goals. His goal in the 54th minute gave the Archers their first lead, and keyed a four-goal onslaught in the second half.
