Archers ready for rematch with Jefferson College

In search of an early-season signature win, St. Louis Community College’s men’s soccer team found that defining moment in a 3-1 defeat of perennial regional power Jefferson College. Eight more wins have followed since that early-season matchup, and the Archers (10-3-1) surely won’t be sneaking up on anyone Sunday, when they will face off against Jefferson for the second time this year.

The game will hold heavy postseason implications, as the two teams continue to jostle for position within regional seeding.  The Archers have posted a record of 3-1-1 within the region, with four regional games yet to play.

“That was definitely a big win for us early, and we know what this game means for us and our program,” head coach Tim Mosby said after defeating Scott Community College 3-1 on Thursday.

STLCC continues to be led by freshman Dillon Smith, who ranks in the top five nationally in scoring with 17 goals. More quietly, the Archers’ defense has been anchored by the combination of sophomore sweeper Nick Hoeflinger and Alfie Fletcher, among others. That group, along with goaltender Nicklaus Bertich, has held opposing teams to just 1.2 goals per game against STLCC.

Coming off of a 7-12-2 season, Mosby has guided the Archers to their largest win total since becoming a district-wide program in 2011. STLCC has outscored their opponents by nearly a 4:1 margin, and enter the weekend unbeaten on the road, a record that will see a stiff challenge at Jefferson on Sunday. Game time is 2 pm.
