Archer men falter in rematch with Jefferson

The much-anticipated rematch for STLCC’s men’s soccer team against Jefferson College went nothing as planned Sunday. The Archers, who defeated Jefferson 3-1 in just its second game of the season, fell 5-2 Sunday in the second meeting between the two teams.

After holding Jefferson to a single goal in the first half, The Vikings ran roughshod over STLCC in a second half that saw the Archers outscored 4-0. The loss dropped the Archers to 10-4-1, and ended a four-game unbeaten streak. STLCC’s record within the region dropped to 3-2-1.

Held relatively quiet was the Archers offense that is averaging 4.2 goals per game. The Archers went into the half tied 1-1, thanks to a goal by freshman defender Casey Bartlett-Scott in the 37th minute.

The second half, however, was a much different story. Jefferson’s Andres Veizaga gave the Vikings a lead they would never relinquish with a goal in the 52nd minute. That touched off a four-goal barrage for Jefferson, a run that was without a response until the Archers’ Matt Schneider notched the final goal of the day in the 87th minute.

The Archers will need to bounce back quickly, as they will host St. Charles Community College in the penultimate home game of the year Tuesday at 4:30 pm. The Archers won the only previous meeting between the two teams, 4-0 on September 9. STLCC will conclude the home portion of its schedule on Thursday, when it will host Hesston College at 4 pm.
