In the Archers’ second game of the season against Danville Area Community College, the outcome posed minimal difference to the first meeting.
Hampered by a challenging first half that saw the Archers in a double-digit deficit within the game’s first 10 minutes, STLCC saw a second-half rally fall well short in an eventual 76-59 loss. It sent the Archers to 0-2 against Danville on the year.
The loss was the team’s seventh in a row, and dropped the Archers to 1-8 overall.
Head coach Terry Collins expressed frustration with a performance that left him significantly dismayed Sunday night.
“It starts with me, and the players, to have to courage to take responsibility for what we displayed in the first 10 minutes,” Collins said. “We didn’t execute offensively and we played lazy defense today. We need to have the courage to own up and address the way we’re playing right now.”
Sean Rigmaiden scored a team-high 20 points for STLCC, but was one of only two Archers to reach double-figures in scoring, a change from what was a more balanced attack in the team’s first meeting with Danville, on Nov. 21, an eventual 76-66 loss.
“In that game, we were able to make some shots early that kind of kept us in it a bit longer, but today, we were just really exposed with our effort tonight,” Collins said.
The Archers will have a week to implement any adjustments before traveling to Arkansas State Mid-South on Saturday. STLCC lost to Mid-South 74-67 in the two teams’ previous meeting, on November 20.
Sunday’s game was part of the annual STLCC Shootout, which the Archers have held at STLCC-Forest Park for the past five years. Other games included Southwestern Illinois College defeating Three Rivers CC 65-63, Mineral Area defeating Lewis and Clark 67-63, and Moberly area topping Olive-Harvey 89-65.
