Archers take down Highland, improve to 1-1

St. Louis Community College evened its record at 1-1 and picked up the first win of Terry Collins’ coaching tenure with the Archers on Friday, with a 91-80 win over Highland Community College.

The Archers shot 60 percent from the field (31 of 52) including 15 of 26 from three-point range. Sophomore guard Andrew Weaver led the Archers with a game-high 24 points, including six of his nine three-point tries. Sophomore guard Rashad Jordan poured in 17 points for STLCC, and also grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.

“As I’ve said previously, I thought we had some guys who can shoot, and that’s what we saw tonight,” Collins said. “We had some guys who shot the ball exceptionally well. Obviously, we aren’t going to shoot like that every game, but we have some guys who can do that, and tonight we did.”

Collins was less enthusiastic about his team’s performance on the defensive end, which saw some struggles for the second straight game. That is, outside of sophomore Marcel Lee, who limited Highland leading scorer Brandon Sublett to just 11 points on the evening.

“When you shoot that well, that’s what people pay attention to, but Marcel Lee didn’t score a point, but did a good job of shutting down the other team’s top scorer,” Collins said.  We’re just trying to get better defensively and that’s going to be a big key. That’s just something that we’re going to have to work smarter and better. The key thing there is just guys who haven’t had a lot of exposure to it. ˙Marcel Lee has had that exposure (at Three Rivers CC). With some of our other players, it’s just going to take time.”

The Archers will return to action Saturday afternoon with a strong early-season test against Kansas City (KS) Community College, who enters this week’s action ranked 20th nationally.
