Archers men look for late-season rebound

In what has been a topsy-turvy first season for head coach Terry Collins and the Archers men’s basketball team, STLCC is looking for one more positive surge as the postseason nears.

The Archers (10-14) have taken on many forms throughout the winter—at first focused on an outside shooting approach, to a team with a much-improved defensive effort, and back to a group that has had difficulty closing out opportunities.

Between December 12 and January 30, the Archers were among the toughest teams in the region to beat, winning nine of 12 games. Entering Saturday against Wentworth Military Academy, however, STLCC has dropped three straight games, including a disappointing, 81-78 setback to Region XVI foe North Central College, a game which saw the Archers leading by 12 at the half.

Despite the recent struggles, the Archers remain in prime position to compete for a regional title, as they enter Saturday with a 3-1 record against regional opponents, including an unblemished mark on the road.
“Since Lincoln Land, we just haven’t played well, and we’ve got to turn it around,” Collins said. “But we need to practice well this week and we might play well Saturday. That might turn it around.”

A date with Wentworth may be just the opportunity the Archers need entering the final weeks of the regular season. STLCC defeated Wentworth in the only meeting between the two teams on January 30, in a 94-73 rout.

 

Sophomores honored Saturday

The 2015-16 men’s basketball season has been one often defined by youth, but the Archers will honor four sophomores Saturday for their careers with STLCC. First-year sophomores Charles Johnson and Marcel Lee join will join second-year holdovers Rashad Jordan and Nate Rigmaiden as honorees before Saturday’s game.
