Archers Split Home Opener Against Olive Harvey

The St. Louis Community College hosted Olive Harvey in the home opener for the 2018 season and came away with a split, losing game 1, 8-7, before bouncing back for a 10-3 victory in game 2.  

Game 1

STLCC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Sam Lombard hit a 2 run blast over the centerfield fence, scoring Jackson Boschert.  Olive Harvey scored two in the top of the third inning and a run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead until the Archers scored 4 runs in the bottom fourth inning.  Austin DesRoche singled to leftfield scoring Jeff Huser, who lead off the inning with a double to rightfield, DesRoche wound up on third base when the leftfielder misplayed the ball.  After Alex Owens walked, Boschert doubled down the leftfield line, scoring both DesRoche and Owen, Boschert would score from second on Andrew Duponts single up the middle giving the Archers a 6-3 lead.  Olive Harvey scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning and a run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 8-6 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.  The Archers loaded the bases with no outs, when Anthony Rask hit a deep fly ball to centerfield scoring Boschert to pull to within one run at 8-7, before a double play ended the rally and the comeback for the Archers.  Boschert, Rask and DesRoche each had 2 hits for STLCC, while Boschert, Dupont and Lombard each drove in 2 runs, Boschert also scored 3 runs in the loss.  Tyler Hash was the tough luck loser on the mound for the Archers. 

Game 2

Once again the Archers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Grant Brueggenjohann hit a high fly ball that went off the rightfielders glove, scoring Lombard and Dupont singled to centerfield two batters later to score Brueggenjohann.  Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Nick DeBeer singled to centerfield scoring Lombard and DeBeer would come around to score on a Dustin Buckner double off the left field wall. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Lombard doubled down the leftfield line to score William Sprick to give STLCC a 5-0 lead.  Olive Harvey score a run in the top of the seventh inning, before the Archers struck again in the bottom half when DeBeer scored on a Sprick fielders choice and Buckner scored on a error by the third basemen off the bat of Boschert.  Olive Harbey scored two runs in the top of the eight inning and the Archers responded with three runs in the bottom half when Brueggenjohann tripled to the rightcenter gap scoring Lombard and then scored on a DeBeer groundout and Clayton Stephens ended the scoring with a single to leftfield scoring Dupont.  Branden Bennett evened his record at 1-1 after striking out six hitters in 2 innings pitched.  Stephens and DeBeer each had 2 hits in the nightcap with Lombard scoring 3 runs.
